Sarah Kelman – “Ten Thousand Miles of Ocean”

In November 2012, Sarah Kelman and her family embarked on their vintage yacht, to participate in the Panerai Transat Classique, a race for similar vessels, from Portugal to Barbados. Having completed the transatlantic event (in a creditable position), they cruised onwards through the Caribbean and the Eastern Seaboard of the United States.

In this talk, Sarah will share with us their experiences of life at sea, illustrated by her photographic record of the people and wildlife encountered, both on and under the ocean.

Tom Way – “The Greater Picture”

This presentation gives a broad overview of Tom’s life as a fine art wildlife photographer. He will demonstrate the various camera settings used to create his preferred style, whilst speaking about the components that he feels are essential in creating evocative wildlife imagery.

Tom will outline the importance of print whilst also speaking about how he creates a viable business through photography.

Andrew Carter – “Harmony of Light”

“I am a lifetime enthusiast photographer, but my career has been in Optoelectronics and Engineering, designing and building the devices that power today’s optical transmission for the Internet. When the pandemic hit, members of our local camera club were looking for activities to try, share and learn from, but at a distance. I chose to build a Harmonograph, which I thought would enable a good variety of images to be produced. I have really surprised and delighted myself! I am discovering new options and patterns almost daily; it is enabling me to explore a range of photographic images which I think are unique and unbounded!”

This evening is an opportunity for members to show their best images from the ‘Evening of Fire’ on the 23rd March.

Member Presentation – Kirsten Norton – Photoshop

In this presentation we will look at some of the useful tools and features in Photoshop including layers, making selections, masks, adjustment layers and cloning. Iwill be working on ‘live’ examples, so please ask as many questions as you want and I’ll do my best to answer them.

Photo Walk

We will hope for good light and meet at an agreed venue for a sociable walk, offering a variety of subject matter to photograph. It is a great opportunity to share ideas and different approaches.

No doubt we’ll all come away with a selection of shots reflective of our own individual style of photography, which we will compare and contrast in a future meeting.

Member-Led Evening

We have two more members sharing some of their work, as follows:

Maggie – Bempton Cliffs Seabirds. Maggie’s presentation explores a range of seabirds that visit and nest on the clifftops at RSPB Bempton Cliffs, and will include images of Gannets, Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots and Kittywakes.

Photo Walk – “In-Out-In”

Please come along to the hall for the normal time. We will then spend one hour exploring the delights of the village with a SINGLE CHOSEN LENS of fixed length. If you do not have one of these, use your zoom at a set focal length throughout the hour. Perhaps consider using an under-used lens to see what you can come up with, but think ahead about what your chosen lens is best for, then find appropriate subjects in the field. Creative techniques can, of course, be layered on top of straight shooting, too.

We will then come back to the hall and aim to show our pick of images straight from the camera over a cuppa. The variety of lenses should allow for an interesting variety of subject and style.

Still Life – Practical Session

This ‘Still Life’ evening will be a practical session led by our own members so please bring along your cameras and tripods (some tripods will be available) to have some fun taking shots of different still life displays and hopefully come away with you own unique images.

Image Review

A members evening where we will share images taken during the Summer Break and from the Still Life session. Please bring up to 3 images from each – 6 in total – on a memory stick.

Warren Alani – “Through the Years”

“Through The Years” is a demonstration of storytelling through the still image, featuring powerful and striking images, many of which have been displayed around the world in exhibitions such as Master of Prints, Royal Photographic Society, FIAP and PAGB.

The presentation features many works which have been merited with some of the most prestigious of photography accolades. Alongside these, the viewer will see images created with my own personal vision, in a style not typically seen in photography clubs or presentations.

Audiences will be mesmerised by the photographs and the variety of subjects on display, including (but not limited to), travel, sports, street, environmental portrait, and many more genres of photography.

The presentation will also cover some of the techniques used to capture these images, and those used in the post-processing stage. It pairs an emotional dissection of the images with a technical insight into their production.

Tony Gervis – “Visions of America”

A passionate traveller and photographer for over 60 years, Tony Gervis has travelled to 117 different countries and extensively in the USA. He has visited every state at least twice including 175 State or National Parks. In 2013, Tony was offered the position of an official photographer for the National Parks of America. He also has a “Go anywhere” pass (better than a press pass) giving him access to 5 of America’s top 10 rodeos.

Tony (who is a few weeks past his 80th birthday) retired from from his investment brokerage business at the age of 50. He is a “Fellow of The Royal Photographic Society”. Sharing his passion with others, Tony has lectured on cruise ships for 6 years and for camera clubs for over 15 years.

equipment and preparation this presentation will really help you to
improve your travel photography.

Head-to-Head against Northampton Natural History Society – at Silverstone

The annual head-to-head against Northampton Natural History Society. This year the category is “Open” and we have selected 20 member images, which will be pitched against 20 images from NNHS in this sociable and friendly competition.

The meeting will be held at Silverstone.

BIG SPEAKER EVENT – An evening with Steve & Ann Toon

Ann and Steve Toon are a UK-based, husband and wife team of award-winning professional wildlife photographers with a passion for the wildlife and wild places of Southern Africa.

After giving up previous jobs as journalists and editors, Ann and Steve chose a six-month sabbatical in the bush and have been photographing there for the last two decades.

“Africa has been life-changing for us: our very first visit to its game reserves inspired us to change tack completely and begin this exciting photographic journey. We’ve never looked back.

We’ve got to know Southern Africa pretty well in that time, although it still remains an infinitely compelling and fascinating place. Which is good news, as we now spend four or five months a year in the bush, leading specialist photographic safaris to some of Africa’s top wildlife destinations and pursuing our own photographic projects. Africa is our first love and second home”.

When Ann and Steve are not in the bush you can find them in a remote corner of North-east England, where they live in Northumberland National Park.
