Member Presentation Evening

Our first meeting of the year is an opportunity to hear presentations from two
of our club members.

John Manning-Smith; “Trying to keep people happy! – When aspiration and
expectation meets perspiration”

Alisdair McLean; “Madagascar Wildlife”

Both presentations sound brilliant and we should appreciate the work put into sharing images and the thoughts behind putting these presentations together for us all to enjoy. John’s presentation title is certainly intriguing and will keep us guessing as to the content! Alisdair has put a number of his images from his recent travels to Madagascar on ‘Band’ as a taster for what is to come. Worth having a look at these superb images and the amazing journey undertaken.

Versatility Challenge

The versatility theme is: Same subject – Different perspectives.

This is an exciting theme with endless possibilities. Please submit at least one series of 3 images of a single subject. If you feel inspired to photograph more than one subject, then please bring along up to three sets of 3 images. We would love to see them!

Roger Butler – “A week on St Kilda’s Hebrides”

This dramatic isolated archipelago, 40 miles west of the Outer Hebrides, has an extraordinary history and the last inhabitants were evacuated in 1930. The islands are now an internationally important National Nature Reserve – just getting there is an adventure in itself! The talk also visits a number of lesser-known Hebridean islands with strange names such as Muck, Eigg and Ulva.

Richard Cobby – “Moments in Time”

“Moments in Time” deals with a wide range of subjects from monochrome portraits (some from my ARPS panel), to candids and landscapes. There is a strong emphasis on scenes from Provence and also Venice and the Lake District. The talk features many in depth aspects of composition explaining why some images are successful whilst others are not so successful.

Cliff Hide – “Stories behind the Pictures”

A look at my favourite press photos from my career to date and the how/why/circumstances
that put me in the right place at the right time.

The stories range from the humorous and light hearted to the deeply tragic.

Andy Carter – “High Key Flora and Macro”

Andy Carter will be presenting and demonstrating “High Key Flora and Macro” photography. The session will include a practical demonstration of the techniques involved including camera settings, use of tripod, light box and front lighting. Andy will also give important guidance on how to compose the subject of the image to get best effect. Quality printed images of Andy’s work will be displayed during the evening.

Image Selection For Olney Head-To-Head

We will select a total of 20 images from BAND submissions, to represent the club in our annual, friendly Head-to-Head with Olney. No more than 3 submissions or selected images from each member to encourage inclusiveness.

Ruth Grinrod – “Colour Tones and Textures”

This presentation explores how colour, tone and texture are all interrelated in landscape photography. The talk explores how to apply the theory to practice and shows a range of my work from around the UK and further afield.

Andy Sands – “It’s a small world”

With a keen interest in Natural History, Andy is renowned for his extraordinary wildlife photography and macro images of insects, particularly bees and wasps. He also photographs fungi and slime moulds, woodland and wading birds.

He supplies Nature Picture Library (www.naturepl.com) with his images and has had his work published in many books and magazines nationally and internationally. He has recently received an APAGB award from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain.

AGM followed by Anne Gray – “The Beauty of North & South Islands, New Zealand”

This is your opportunity to reflect on the past year, give feedback, voice your opinion and vote in a new committee.

Anne will present photographs from her recent trip to New Zealand.

Head-To-Head Against Olney Camera Club – With Guest Judge; Richard Cobby

A selection of 20 of our members’ best images will be pitted against Olney’s selection in what is always a fun, sociable evening.

Malcolm Hupman – “Where I photograph British Wildlife”

This presentation will be suitable for both experienced and novice photographers especially those new to wildlife and bird photography. Location, time of year and weather all influence what you are likely to see and Malcolm will give guidance on equipment and settings used to achieve great results.

Kevin Pigney – “My Passion for Wildlife”

Kevin will be sharing many of his superb wildlife images and will be going into detail of how they were achieved including a behind the scenes chapter on setting up a project and fieldcraft skills.

Practical members evening – “Macro and Focus Stacking”

In house set-ups to try Macro photography, giving members the opportunity to share their knowledge of Macro and Focus stacking with others.

TDPS Photographic Challenge – “The Colour Blue”

By popular request from members we are are re-introducing more photographic challenges into the TDPS Programme. Each challenge will run for two months.

The first challenge, to commence this July and August, has the theme “The Colour Blue”.

Open to your interpretation so let your imagination and camera create some great ‘new’ images. These challenges are not ‘competitions’ but an opportunity to test your creativity, share your work and receive helpful feedback from your fellow members. Band albums will be set up to post your images.

We are proposing to add an additional session (probably on Zoom) every 4 months to review the 2 preceeding themes. The dates for the reviews will be added to the programme closer to the time.

An Evening Garden Visit at a beautiful location, 6:00 PM – 9.30 PM. More information about the exact location and ticket prices will be communicated to members via email.

Peter Milsom – “The Power of Sport”

“Peter took up photography seriously in 2006 following 18 years of
competitive athletics and coaching. His first efforts were directed at
the sports events he was familiar with, and he gradually extended these
to other sports including canoe slalom, jetski racing and various para
sports.

Peter is on personal terms with many of the athletes, and provides
photographs to help them improve their technique. His aim is to capture
those special moments during the highs and lows of sport and the efforts
and emotions shown in achieving a world class performance.
He is often granted media accreditation to major events which allow him
to capture Images of world class athletes from the best vantage points.”

Member evening – “Bring your camera kit”

This promises to be a fun and informative evening where members are encouraged to bring their camera kit and share knowledge on why they enjoy their camera and how they use it. A great opportunity to learn more about your own camera and other systems as well. Particularly useful if you are thinking about adding to or upgrading your current set-up.

Image Sharing – “The Power of Sport – Your turn”

Taking inspiration from the presentation on ‘The power of sport’ by Peter Milsom, it is now members turn. We encourage you to bring and share up to five images on the theme of sport.

Challenge – Blue and Contre Jour – Image Review

Please bring and share images you have taken for the challenges Blue and Contre Jour.

Northampton Natural History Society head-to-head – Image Selection

The annual head-to-head against Northampton Natural History Society.
This year the category is Open and we are required to select 15 images.

Please bring along up to 3 of your best images!

Northampton Natural History Society head-to-head

The annual head-to-head against our friends at Northampton Natural History Society.

This year the category is “Open” and we have selected 15 member images, which will be pitched against 15 images from NNHS in this friendly competiton. A judge will be giving an informative critique of each photo and  scores allocated on each image.

The meeting will be hosted by NNHS.

Venue: The Humfrey Rooms, 10 Castilian Terrace, Northampton NN1 1LD. Start time: 7.30 pm

Member evening – “Your smart phone images…and mince pies!”

A festive evening where we can share some of the images we’ve taken on our smart phones and enjoy a mince pie or two!
